GENERAL and SOCIAL ENGLISH – B2 level – 2018

Objective: To develop confidence in using English as a second language in the most interactive way. Allow the students to use useful language in different daily situations.

Level: At least B2 CEF (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)VANTAGE: the capacity to achieve most goals and express oneself on a range of topics. Example: CAN show visitors around and give a detailed description of a place.

Time: 20 hrs/ 2 hrs twice a week

Location: Domodossola (Collegio Rosmini)

N. of lessons: 10 lessons (2 hrs each)

Participants: max 15

Fee and Entry Term: the deadline for submitting applications is Thursday 21stJune2018 by 12.00. The order of registration determines the order of admission.

Refund policy: no course activation or cancellations within 19.06.2018 100% refund; in other cases no refund.

Lesson 3: Checking in (Hotel) (Flight)

Monday – 2nd July 19.15-21.15

at the end of the lesson, the students will learn the following:

a. Speaking- I’d like to check in please. Could you fill out this registration card? Have you stayed here before. How do we get to the restaurant?

b. Vocabulary- business suite, host, sky view restaurant, room deposit, bureau exchange.

c. Useful language- take the elevator/lift etc. The fitness centre is on the 6th floor. When’s check out? Our plane is not until 5pm on Saturday

Lesson 4: Handling crisis

Wednesday – 4th July 19.15-21.15

at the end of the lesson, the students will learn the following:

a. Speaking- Who have you already spoken to about the incident? Have you issued a statement yet? Give me the worst case scenario

b. Vocabulary- law suit. Contingency plan, full incident report,

c. Useful Language- We need to run some tests, I guess they could shut us down if it is really bad. I’m going to get him to contact you. Things have been pretty crazy. I need to know we’re on the same page here.

Lesson 5: Arguing effectively

Monday – 9th July 19.15-21.15

at the end of the lesson, the students will learn the following:

a. Tag questions- have we? Don’t you? Is it? Casting doubt of an idea

b. Speaking- There are few things at play. Sorry, but you seem to be focusing on factors that are beyond our control

c. Vocabulary- batting heads, poor attendance. Interrupting.

d. Useful vocabulary- That definitely had an impact. Sorry but I have to jump in here. Let’s get into specifics. Some things get screwed up. I know what you are getting at. Hang on here that point needs clarifying.

Lesson 6: Restaurant Problems

Wednesday – 11th July 19.15-21.15

at the end of the lesson, the students will learn the following:

a. Speaking- I’m sorry but I asked for a baked potato not fries. I’ll send it back to the kitchen,

b. Vocabulary- starters, well done, rare, wine list, main course.

c. Useful language- I asked for my steak rare not this well done. We only had two glasses of wine not a bottle. That was a lovely dinner. Where shall we go?

Lesson 7: Lost in San Francisco

Monday – 16th July 19.15-21.15

at the end of the lesson, the students will learn the following:

a. Speaking- Go out of the hotel and turn left. Turn left at Stockton. Go straight ahead, down Sutter street. It’s the third street on the left.

b. Vocabulary- opposite the museum, behind the church. pass through the tunnel. Couple of blocks.

c. Useful language- That’s really kind of you. I’m looking for Union square. Sorry where did you say?

Lesson 8: Buying clothes

Wednesday – 18th July 19.15-21.15

at the end of the lesson, the students will learn the following:

a. Speaking- It’s too big for me. What size is it? Do you have the receipt? Would you like to exchange it for something else?

b. Vocabulary- try it on, size, blouse, track suit, trousers, refund

c. Useful language- I’m sorry but we don’t have another one in black. Could I have a refund?

Lesson 9: Polite way (offers, asking sb to do sth, permission,)

Monday – 23th July 19.15-21.15

at the end of the lesson, the students will learn the following:

a. Modals- Can/Could, Will/Shall/Would, Must/Have to, Should/Ought to

b. Speaking- Do you mind closing the window? Could you get some water? Could you lend me some money? Would you like to come with us?

c. Difference- bring vs take, come vs go, lend vs borrow

Lesson 10: Pronounciation (a-z silent letters), Final test

Wednesday – 25th July 19.15-21.15

at the end of the lesson, the students will learn the following:

a. Speaking- So, this is an Italian specialty popular in the South. It’s served with rice or vegetables. It’s a kind of dumpling. Can we have the bill please?

b. Vocabulary- potato wedges, roast, courgette, bake, fry, grill

c. Useful language- Let’s see if we can catch the waiter’s attention, I am starving, I’m afraid they don’t have menus in English, I’d like sparkling/still water.

Certificate

At the end of the course, an attendance certificate will be issued to all members who have attended at least 80% of the course (or 16 hours out of 20 total) and who have passed the final test.
